Apraxia of Speech Flashcards
What is Apraxia of Speech?
a neurological speech disorder reflecting impaired capacity to plan or program sensorimotor commands necessary for directing movements required for phonetically and prosodically normal speech
Can Apraxia occur without disturbance of language
yes
Describe Motor Planning
processes that define and sequence articulatory goals (prior to initiation of movement)
i.e. which articulators should move and in what order (phonetic planning)
Describe Motor Programming
processes that prepare the flow of motor info across muscle as well as control timing and force of movement (prior to initiation of movement)
i.e. how quickly to move, how far to move, and how muscles move together
Describe how Motor Execution
processes that activate relevant muscles (during and after initiation of movement
What are the 2 types of Apraxia of Speech
Childhood and Acquired/ Adult
Describe Childhood Apraxia of Speech
may be due to infection, illness, or injury to the brain before or after birth affecting speech motor development
or
genetic disorders
Describe Acquired/ Adult Apraxia of Speech
typically accompanies Brocas aphasia- due to stroke or injury in adulthood
What does Apraxia of Speech typically affect
prosody and articulation
What are typically spared when it comes to Apraxia of Speech
respiration, resonance, and phonation
What are some articulation errors made
Phoneme subs and repetitions are more common than distortions, omissions, or additions
consonant cluster produce more errors than single consonants, single consonants produce more errors than vowels
Multisyllabic words produce more errors than monosyllabic words
Volitional speech prduction (describing a picture) is more difficult than automatic or reactive speech (counting or swearing)
articulatory errors are inconsistent on repeated attempts of the same word/ utterance
Are people self aware of errors? if they are what happens and what does it result in?
yes, they are aware and they try to self correct which leads to a slower rate of speech and sometimes articulatory groping
What are some Prosodic errors made?
slower rate of speech
silent pauses at the beginning of word or between words(intrusive schwa)- may be related to finding articulatory placement
equal and greater stress placed on all the syllables in an utterance
in some cases reduced pitch and loudness variations
