Approches To Reseach Flashcards
Correlation
As one variable changes so does the other
(this relationship does NOT imply cause and effect)
Correlation coefficient
Correlation measured through research
What represents Correlations coefficient
The letter “r”
What is r’s range
-1 to 1
As r approaches +/- 1
The stronger the correlation
As r approaches 0 (+/-)
The weaker the correlation
A positive correlation (r)
Variables move in the same Direction
A negative correlation (-r)
Variables move in opposite directions
A negative correlation (-r)
Variables move in opposite directions
Some other 3rd variable that explains the relationship between the two variables
Confounding variables
A basic experiment includes
Experimental condition and a control condition (experimental condition gets the experimental manipulation)
The variable we are manipulation
Independent variable
The outcome variable; what we are measuring
Dependent variable
The materials we chose to use produce a given result (ex if you retake GRE exam you are very likely to get the results result)
Reliability
The materials we chose actually measure what we want it to measure (the GRE is meant to assess is students are ready for graduate school but actually does not measure that)
