Approaches- SLT Approach Flashcards

1
Q

Which approaches does SLT act as a bridge between and why?

A

The behaviourist approach emphasises the importance of the environment and reinforcement.
The cognitive approach emphasises the importance of mental processes.

Q

what are mediational processes?

A

cognitive factors that influence learning.
come between stimulus and response.

Q

what are the stages of the social learning theory?

A

Attention- form a mental representation of the behaviour.
Retention- store the observed behaviour in LTM.
Reproduction- must have the ability to reproduce behaviour
Motivation- must expect to receive the same positive reinforcement.

Q

what is vicarious reinforcement?

A

when learners observe role models receiving reinforcement for an action and therefore imitâtes that behaviour.

Q

describe the method used in Bandura’s Bobo doll study.

A
  • lab experiment
  • american children, 36 boys,36 girls aged 3-6 years old
-group 1: 12 each shown model hitting doll with hammer.
  • group 2: 12 each shown non-aggressive model
    -group 3: 12 each not shown model(cg)
  • all taken to a room with attractive toys and told not to play- aggression arousal
  • taken to room with bobo doll, non/aggressive tools.

Q

what can we conclude from bandura’s bobo doll study?

A

children imitate the behaviour of role models even if the behaviour is aggressive.

Q

what can we conclude from Bandura and Walter’s study?

Q

how has SLT been applied to every day life?

A

explains influence of media on behaviour.

Jamie Bulger’s murder

children claimed influenced by Child Play 3

however they came from disturbed families where they may have witnessed violence

Q

Evaluate SLT

A

Supported by research:
- bandura and bandura walter
H- lab experiments, tasks didn’t reflect normal life.
adults would guide understanding of behaviour, children knew doll didn’t understand pain.
demand characteristics?

Theory doesn’t explain why boys more aggressive than girls- biological factors must be involved, lack of info means lack of reliability.

explains behaviour differences in cultures. eg why amish are non-violent.
