Approaches of the study of semantic Flashcards
What is contextual approach
Contextual approach is an approach of understanding word or sentence meanings
based on the context in which they are used. For example, In a sentence like “I need to go to the bank to withdraw some money,” the word “bank” refers to a financial institution where transactions occur. In contrast, in the sentence “The children played by the bank of the river,” “bank” refers to the land alongside a river.
What is the mentalistic approach
The mentalistic approach focuses on how
meaning exists in the brain, arising from concepts and associations stored in long-term
memory. For example, Person A looks out the window on a rainy day and says to Person B, “What a beautiful day it is!” Literally, the statement expresses a positive sentiment about the weather. However, the intended meaning is sarcastic, indicating that Person A actually thinks the weather is unpleasant.
Two group of language skill
- Receptive or constructive skill (Listening and reading): Configuration of concepts are used to reconstruct and interpret the meaning of incoming language data.
- Productive skill (Speaking and writing):
Configuration of concepts are organized by grammatical rule.
What is the reference in mentalistic approach
This represents the mental concept or idea associated with the symbol and referent (e.g., what one thinks of when they hear “tree”).
What is symbol in mentalistic approach
This refers to the word or phrase used to convey meaning (e.g., the word “tree”).
What is referent in mentalistic approach
This is the actual object or concept in the real world that the symbol refers to (e.g., a specific tree).
