Approaches-humanistic approach Flashcards
Assumptions of Humanistic Approach
Free Will
Self, congruence and condition of worth
What is free will?
People are active agents who can determine their own development
‘Self’ term means?
They way they see themselves, who they are
Explain congruence
Is when the ‘self’ and the ‘ideal self’ of a person has little gap, they will experience congruence where they will achieve self-actualisation.
Explain conditions of worth
When your parents, or a person sets boundaries on the love they give
Self-actualisation meaning?
The desire to become the best versions of ourselves, through personal & psychological growth
What is Client centred therapy (CCT), what is the purpose of it. What will they do in CCT?
A type of counselling aims to reduce the gap between ‘self’ & ‘ideal self’ and experiencing congruence. Therapists will give patients unconditional positive regards, which is what they might lack in childhood.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs.
Psychological needs –> safety needs –> Belonging and love needs –> esteem needs –> self-actualisation
3 Evaluation points of the Humanistic approach
Not Reductionist - Strength
Untestable and subjective concepts
Positive approach
Explain evaluation point: Not reductionist
*Humanist app reject breaking up behaviour and experience into smaller components
+Behaviourists explain human & animal in stimulus
+Freud described human personality as conflict between 3 things: Id,ego, superego
+Cognitive sees humans as ‘machines’
=>Humanist app advocates holism, subjective experience can only be understood by considering the whole person
–> This approach has more validity
Explain evaluation point: Untestable and subjective concepts
*Humanism suffers from lack of evidence and cannot be measured
+Lack empirical evidence & no possibility to systemically observe & measure the processes
+Concepts maybe useful to therapy but cannot be assessed under experimental conditions
+Rogers did attempt to help by Q-sort, an objective measurement for humanist app but failed.
=> Humanist app can only be useful under specific conditions like in therapy. Cannot be measured and untestable
