When making an appreciation, you will need to make a decision. What are the four things required to be able to make a decision?
- Knowledge (of the law, procedures, situation)

What are the two forms of an appreciation and their uses?
- Full formal appreciation (for high level or difficult tactical or administrative problems)
- Shortened note appreciation (urgent or pressing problems requiring immediate action)
When should you use a written appreciation?
- If there are several points to be considered and there is a danger of the points being overlooked if they are not written down
- A clear picture of the situation is desired to present a logical argument that will carry conviction to a higher authority
- A written appreciation also provides a record of why a certain course of action was taken, so it may be useful for later reference
What are the basic rules of critical thinking?

What are the four steps of an appreciation?
AFCO - aim, factors, courses open, plan
What are the two steps when forming an aim?
1 - Review the information you have
2 - Identify from this information the ‘Commanders Intent’ and any constraints that have been placed on you
Commanders intent will either be directly given or inferred from the circumstances
What is a constraint?
Any limitation given to you by the Commanders Intent or out of the information you have received
E.g. - you have been tasked to execute a search warrant but only assigned three staff. This limitation will impact the courses open and hence the aim
What is a factor?
A fact, influence or circumstance contributing to a result
