regular meetings (every 6 months to a year), where staffs performance is analysed usually against targets

- motivate
- improve performance
- allows setting of targets
- identifies training needed

- create tension in the work place
- put staff under pressure to meet targets
- places too much power in line-managers hands

what is self and peer assessments
A
- critically reflecting upon your own performance
- peers will suggest methods of improvement
- this appears less critical than if from managers

what is 360 degree appraisal
A
- feedback from everyone who is deemed relevant
- fellow workers, line managers, team members, customers or suppliers
- this helps managers get a full picture to decide promotional decisions
