Generic
General purpose software - not written for any particular business (spreadsheets, word processors)
Integrated
Has common sets of commands and icons.
Cheaper to buy separately
Can include database (graphics software)
Specific
Written for a defined purpose
Can be bought by anyone
Bespoke
Written when a company requires software to perform a very specific task
Has to be written from scratch
No existing software requires what they need.
Open source software (advantages)
- eg. Linux
Free of copyright - usually available to anyone
Anyone can modify the raw codes for their purposes
Can have many authors
Open source software (disadvantages)
No guarantee that it works properly
No guarantee that it’s bug free
Proprietary Software (advantages)
Should be free of bugs
If bug exist, updates (patches) are provided free of charge
Proprietary Software (disadvantages)
Copyrighted
Initial or ongoing subscription required
