Application of Forces Flashcards
Moment Equation
moment = force (N) x distance from pivot (cm or m)
Pressure
The amount of force pushing on a certain area. A way of saying how spread out a force is. This is measured in pascals(Pa).
Calculating Pressure
Force = Pressure x Area
Pressure = Force ÷ Area
Area = Force ÷ Pressure
Air pressure increases with depth because…
There is lots of air above you.
Pressure decreases as you climb higher because…
There is little air above you.
Buoyancy / Upthrust
- This is the force that acts against gravity/weight in water.
- If Buoyancy = Weight then the object will float.
Archimedes’ Principle
- An object placed in water will feel an upthrust force (buoyancy), equal to the weight of the water it displaces.
- If this upthrust is large enough, that makes an object float.
What is a pivot?
The point around which the object can rotate or turn.
What does the size of a moment depend on?
Size of force applied and distance of force from pivot.
How to balance a moment?
Total clockwise moment must be equal to anti-clockwise moment.
