Resumes used when
applying for employment in private practice, industry and most non-profit employment.
CVs used when
applying for academic employment including most internships and residency applications
Letter of intent
Focus of letter will vary depending upon the recipient but can be used to communicate other information
Resume
Snapshot of skills and qualifications designed to sell competencies to a potential employer
- two pages, max 4 pages
- use 12 point serif not less than .75 inch margin
Do not include on resume
Personal information
- age, sex, ss#, health, marital status, children, religion
- Don’t use I or other pronouns, write in third person
Content of resume
- Contact info
- Objective (clear explanation of area of career interest)
- Education (list all degrees in reverse order, don’t include GPA or class rank, no highschool stuff)
- Work experience (chronologic start with most recent, include place and dates)
Fair game for resumes
- Externships, and volunteer
- Focus on accomplishments as employee and competencies

- Use short phrases or sentences that begin with action verbs
- Avoid repeated used of intro phrases like ‘responsibilities include

Intro to employer and supplement to resume/CV
- opening paragraph
- 1-2 paragraph body
- closing paragraph
Letter of intent pointers
- Always state the name of the position to which you’re applying and why it interests you
- match accomplishments and skills to job requirements
- The closing paragraph should tie up your intent and give an action plan (I will be in town maybe we can meet in person)
