What are the boundaries of the oral cavity?
Extends from oral tissue to oropharynx
Superior - Hard and soft palate
Inferior - floor made of muscle
Lateral - Cheeks and lips (walls)
What is the oral vestibule?
When jaw is closed is the area that can be seen
Includes:
1. Gingiva
2.Teeth
3. Lips
What is the oral cavity proper?
Area behind the teeth when closed
1. Tongue
2. Soft and hard plate
What are the differences between hard and soft palate?
Hard palate - Made of bone, and not pliable with a pale pink colour
Soft palate - made of muscle, darker pink colour due to rich blood supply
Where do the soft and hard plate meet?
Vibrating line
What muscles make the floor of the mouth?
- Mylohyoid muscle - majority
- Anterior belly of digastric
What is the texture of the floor of the mouth?
Moist and quite pink due to rich blood supply
What are the functions of the tongue?
- Sensation - taste and general
- Articulation
- Swallowing
- Chewing
What is the tongue made off?
Tongue is a muscle
Contains both Intrinsic muscles and extrinsic muscles
Difference between ventral and dorsal tongue surfaces?
Dorsal - Top surface, has a rough feel due to papillae on the surface
Ventral - bottom surface, smooth feel due to being non-keratinised
What is the Fauces of the oral cavity?
Space between the uvula and Palatoglossal and palatophrayngeal arches, leads to the Pharynx
