Apparatus P-3 Basic Pumping Operations Flashcards
Transfer valve enables pump to operate in VOLUME or pressure.
SOP is VOLUME POSITION
exception: overcome head pressures/STANDPIPE OPS…change before lines are charged
do not confuse with PPG’s PRESSURE MODE
PUMP IDLE PRESSURE?
apparatus is at its LOWEST RPMS
this equals pressure PUMPS PROVIDE (55 in volume/110 in pressure ) PLUS water intake pressure received from hydrant (50 psi or so)
50+55= 105 pump idle pressure
PPG?
computer that controls discharge pressure by controlling engine RPMs
PPG can operate in PRESSURE (standard) or RPM(this mode , WILL NOT automatically compensate for any changes in discharge pressure…this is only EMERGENCY BACK UP, if pressure mode malfunctions )
FOR THIS REASON, ALWAYS OPERATE IN PRESSURE MODE
Static Pressure?
INTAKE pressure gauge , water is NOT FLOWING (pressure from hydrant)
RESIDUAL PRESSURE?
remaining pressure indicated on INTAKE gauge once WATER IS FLOWING (stair is 60 psi, water flowing , intake pressure will drop, this is RESIDUAL )
FLOWMETER:
only when water is FLOWING…Gallons per minute
Flowmeters can be used for ECC to determine problems
Example: ECC supplies correct pressure to 1 3/4” line operating at fire and correct flow meter reading is approx. 180 GPM….suddenly , officer is calling for more water and the ECC notes that flowmeter has dropped to 110 GPM…indication of KINKS….
Same situation….officer reports LOSS OF PRESSURE, but flowmeter reading has INCREASED TO 230 GPM…indicates BURST LENGTH
HYDRANTS that will be used shall be TESTED BEFORE HOOKING UP.
Flush hydrant: do NOT open fully, open several turns and let water push out debris gently…then open FULLY
HYDRANT CONNECTIONS:
FIRST TO ARRIVE- 10’ small/35’ soft suction
Other than first to arrive on FIRST ALARM- 10’small/10’hard/35’ soft suction
arriving on 2nd alarm or greater- 10’ hard
DRAFTING- 10’ HARD
blocked out- length of 3 1/2” hose or 35’ soft–if it can reach
IN line pumping - 3 1/2” hose
Connect to hydrant ______, in case repositioning is required.
FIRST, before hooking up to apparatus
Charging pump (insure all drains, discharges and inlets are in closed position)..
Open HYDRANT FULLY (don’t confuse with flushing hydrant)
open GATED INLET FULLY (open drain to expel air prior to opening gate)
It is important to NOTE hydrant intake pressure at the outset of an operation.
when RESIDUAL PRESSURE DROPS BELOW 15 PSI on INTAKE pressure gauge, AUGMENTATION is required
Pump must PRIMED(AFTER WATER is introduced, before increasing pump pressure), before?
opening INITIAL LINE AT ANY OPERATION
When PPG is malfunctioning , the apparatus shall be placed ?
OUT OF SERVICE
Increase and Decrease on PPG, will allow pressure from 45 PSI to 600 PSI..
pressure will ramp up at 1 psi increments when pressed momentarily…it will ramp up and down at 5 psi and then 10 psi when held down for more than 1 second
Preset is based on what?
typical hydrant pressures in ENGINE COMPANY’S response area combined with pressure the pump typically idles at IN VOLUME (55 +50=105 preset–idle pressure)
