Apoptosis and Stem Cells Flashcards
What is Apoptosis?
Programmed cell death, in which
cells shrink, shrivel, and are digested in a
controlled way.
What is stem cells?
Unspecialized cells that can develop into specialized cells when under the right conditions.
What is the first type of stem cells?
Embryonic Stem Cells
What are Embryonic Stem Cells?
Cells that result after a sperm fertilizes an egg, resulting in a dividing mass of cells (about 100-150) that are NOT specialized yet.
What is the second type of stem cells?
Adult Stem Cells
What are Adult Stem Cells?
Cells that can be found in various tissues in the body, that may have the ability to develop into different kinds of cells.
Where are Adult Stem Cells located?
the brain, bone marrow, blood vessels, skeletal muscle, skin, teeth, heart, gut, and liver.
