Aphasias Flashcards
Broca’s Aphasia
-Blockage of superior L MCA
Non-Fluent, Effortful
- telegraphic
- agrammatic
- automatic speech
- very aware of errors
- understands everything
Anomic Aphasia
-Diverse cause & sites of lesion
Main Problem: Word Retrieval in Spontaneous Speech & Naming Tasks
- fluent
- grammatically correct
- unusual pauses
- circumlocutions
- substitutions of non-specific words
Wernicke’s Aphasia
Blockage of inferior L MCA
Fluent, Effortless
- meaningless
- impaired comprehension
- jargon- neologisms (non-words)
- paraphasia errors
- repetition
- prosody intact
- unaware of errors
Global Aphasia
Infarct of Entire L MCA
Profound Impairments of all Modalities of Receptive & Expressive Language
- perseverative utterances
- relay on gestures/drawing to communicate
- attentive, alert,
- socially appropriate
- can perform non-verbal tasks
Conduction Aphasia
- Lesion of Arcuate Fasciculus
Arcuate Fasciculus: communication between Broca’s & Wernicke’s Area - Grossly Impaired Repetition with preserved language comprehension
- paraphasia errors in spontaneous speech
- pauses = word retrieval
- alert, attentive
- aware of erros
- unsuccessful attempts at self-correction
Transcortical Aphasia
Watershed area Damage; surrounding MCA
Dominant Hemispheres
- Surrounding areas damaged
Pericentral Aphasia
Repetition Lost = central aphasia
Repetition Intact = pericentral aphasia
Transcortical Motor Aphasia
Damage anterior & superior to Broca’s area
Repetition Intact
Transcortical Sensory Aphasia
Posterior Watershed Infart
Repetition Intact
- No speech comprehension
Subcortical Aphasia
Various Lesion Locations
