A.P.A.M.C.O Flashcards
What does APAMCO stand for?
A= altitude p =power, A = airspeed, m=maneuver ready, c = clearing turns. o =outsideretrence
Define A in APAMCO.
Altitude:
1. Establish the safe altitude for the performance of the maneuver
2. Caution: If possibility of loss of altitude in the maneuver, !Allow for recovery space no less than 1,500ft AGL.
Define P in APAMCO.
P= Power
Throttle power should be set to desired cruise airspeed at THE START of maneuver.
Allow time for aircraft to adjust
Define the second A in APAMCO
Airspeed:
VERIFY airspeed it is showing what was specified by the manufacturer for the maneuver
Note: Often the starting airspeed is at or below “Va” Maneuvering Speed, this will give full control
Define M in APAMCO.
M is Maneuver Ready:
1. The configuration will depend on the aircraft
Common configurations are:
A. Landing Light ON: Increases visibility
B. Mixture is BEST POWER: Allows enough fuel for full power recovery and climb
C. Carb. Heat is ON if Carbureted airplanes, when low engine power setting is needed
D. FUEL PUMP is ON for Low Wing Aircraft
Define C in APAMCO.
C is Clearing Turn:
Enough Visual Scanning and this can be done doing a 180* turn,
However you can also do this by doing two 90* clearing turns - right then left or left then right
Define O in APAMCO.
O is Outside Reference:
- Choose outside ground reference for the maneuver
Select a distant point as a heading reference
Sometimes a point or line on the ground, or rectangular pattern
- creates a smoother and stable flight
- eyes outside most of the time
-Heading indicator can be an aid.
Which of the following is the safest altitude at which to start a practice maneuver in which a loss of altitude due to an inadvertent stall is possible?
A. 1,200 ft AGL
B. 3,000 ft AGL
C. 3,000 ft MSL
B: 3,000 ft AGL
Why is altitude established first? Why isn’t power or airspeed established first?
Changing altitude will likely require a change in power and airspeed.
How is the correct power setting for a maneuver determined?
Whatever power is required to deliver the maneuver entry airspeed in straight and level flight. In other words the power setting is based on the airspeed needed for that maneuver.
Where can airspeed limitations for practice maneuver be found?
Pilot’s Operating Handbook or Airplane Flight Manual
Why is the landing light turned ON for most practice maneuvers?
To make the airplane easily visible to pilots on other aircraft.
For each aircraft, identify which items would likely be a standard part of Maneuver Readiness.
Landing Light ON= On both Cessna 172 SP and Piper warrior
Carburetor heat ON = Piper warrior (carbureted, low wing)
Auxiliary Fuel Pump ON= Piper warrior Carburetor, low wing
Mixture Full RICH= BOTH Cessna 172 SP and Piper Warrior
When practicing one maneuver right after the other, clearing turn should only be performed for initial maneuver.
True or False
False: It should be performed before starting each maneuver.
What outside reference shoul the pilot identify during APAMCO?
A ground reference point at which to point the nose at the start of the maneuver and throughout.
