Genre
Literally means “sermon.” More informally, can include a serious talk, speech, or lecture involving moral or spiritual advice.
Lying is wrong unless its for the right reasons

Homily
A figure of speech using deliberate exaggeration.
I am so hungry I could eat a horse
Hyperbole
The sensory details that appeal to your five senses.
The thunderous lighting flashed and the yellow light struck the tree with a loud snap. The smell of fresh cut grass and pine filled the air. It was so strong that Sarah could almost taste it.
Imagery
To draw a conclusion from the information presented.
Her eyes were puffy and red. (She must’ve been crying).
infer/inference
An emotionally violent, verbal denunciation, or attack using strong, abusive language.
I can’t wait for you to die, so I can go to your funeral and personally spit in your face before you’re buried.

The contrast between what is stated explicitly, and what is actually meant.

ironic/Irony
A type of sentence in which the main idea (independent clause) comes first, followed by dependent grammatical units such as phrases and clauses.
The old man went to sleep, woke up, went back to bed, never woke up again
Loose sentence
A figure of speech which implies comparison of seemingly unlike things.
