AP Psych Unit 1 History and Approaches Flashcards
William James
Helped found the school of philosophy and established functionalism.
Wilhelm Wundt
Founded experimental psychology as a discipline and performed the first experiment. Founded structuralism
Functionalism
Studies components of behavior and claims the adaptation of the human mind is vital.
Structuralism
Seeks to analyze the total sum of experience of the mind and break into small components to study how these fit to create complex experiences.
Introspection
Examination of one’s own mental state
Behavioral perspective
Psychological approach that behavior and external stimuli are the only way to study development.
Watson
Behaviorist, applied it to child development and claimed that he could mold any child into any profession by altering their environment. Performed the Little Albert experiment.
Cognitive Perspective
Approach that focuses how internal thoughts influence behavior
Piaget
Created the child development theory in that children aren’t passive recipients of knowledge but need to create a mental model of their environment.
Humanistic Perspective
Way of examining the human as a whole instead of through smaller aspects. Examples include workers being trained to treat their coworkers nicely no matter their differences.
Psychodynamic/psychoanalysis
Focuses on the root of emotional suffering, like childhood trauma.
