Epigraph
a short quotation, phrase, or poem that is placed at the beginning of another piece of writing to encapsulate that work’s main themes and to set the tone
enjambed
continuing a line after the line breaks
epistrophe
repetition of a word or expression at the end of successive phrases, clauses, sentences, or verses especially for rhetorical or poetic effect
epithet
adjective or phrase that is used to express a characteristic of a person or thing
euphony

exposition
a literary device that is meant to relay background information about a main character, setting, event or other element of the narrative.
extended metaphor
a metaphor in a literary work, such as a novel or poem, that isn’t just used in one line but is extended over multiple lines or throughout the work.
figurative language
the use of words in a way that deviates from the conventional order and meaning in order to convey a complicated meaning, colorful writing, clarity, or evocative comparison.
foreshadowing
a narrative device in which suggestions or warnings about events to come are dropped or planted
frame
a story set within a story, narrative, or movie, told by the main or the supporting character
