AP Huge U1 Flashcards
Choropleth
Thematic map that uses colors and shading, good for density
Dot map
Uses dots to show distribution, not great for density
Isoline
everytime you cross a line you change the value
Cartogram
Physical size changes, proportional to data
Thematic maps
quantitative data, utilizes visual stimuli
Reference maps
informational, display physical and man-made features
absolute
quantitative measurement
relative
qualitative (needs something else to understand location)
Mercator projection
preserves shape, but distorts size at higher latitudes (big Greenland)
Gall peters projection
Preserves size but distorts shape, image apears opposite of mercator- has huge africa
Robinson projection
preserves size and shape of continetnts but distorts polar areas, compromise projection often used in published atlases- flat on top and bottom and rounded on sides
Goodes projection
Interrupted projection removes much of the oceans to preserve size and shape of land masses, often used for thematic maps
