Alpha blocker - main indication
(e.g tamsulosin)
Improves symptoms benign prostatic enlargement (BPH)
(lifestyle changes insufficient)
Add on treatment - resistant hypertension
Alpha blocker - MOA
Binds + inhibits the alpha 1 adrenoreceptors in smooth muscle (blood vessels/ urinary tract - bladder neck + prostrate)
Leads to muscle relaxation/ vasodilation/ fall in BP/ reduced resistance to bladder overflow
Alpha blocker - side effects
Postural hypotension/ dizziness/ syncope
Alpha blocker - Contraindications
Existing postural hypotension
Alpha blocker - Key interactions
+ anti-hypertensive drugs
Anti- muscarinic - main indication (e.g Oxybutynin)
Bladder training ineffective
1st line treatment - overactive bladder
Reduce urinary frequency/ urgency/ incontinence
