PPI - indication
1) H.pylori eradication - triple therapy
2) GORD/ dyspepsia
3) Peptic ulcer disease
4) Long-term NSAID - gastro protection
PPI - MOA
Irreversibly binds to the H+/K- ATPase in gastric parietal cells - reduces gastric acid secretion - targets the final stage of gastric acid secretion
PPI - Side effects
Nausea/ hypomagnesaemia/ abdo pain
Increased risk of c.diff
PPI - Contraindications
Caution - elderly - increased risk of osteoporosis + fractures
Can reduce/ disguise symptoms of gastric/ oesophageal cancer - important to check ‘ALARM’ symptoms
PPI - Interactions
PPI - omeprazole + clopidogrel
PPI - Monitoring
Long-term PPI use - check serum magnesium levels
