Interest groups
Voluntary associations of people who came together with the goal of getting the policies they favor enacted
Theory of participatory democracy
model of governance that emphasis the broad involvement of citizens in decision-making processes that affect their lives
Pluralist theory
a theory of political party is distributed amount of economic + political power
Civil Society
the formal and informal organizations that are not part of the state apparatus in public
Elitist theory
a theory that the wealthy elite class has a disporportante amount of economic + political power
Policy agenda
the set of issues to which government officials, voters, and the public are paying attention
Collective good (public good)
a public benefit that individuals can enjoy or profit from even if they do not help achieve it
Collective action
political action that occurs when individuals contribute their energy, time, or money to a larger group goal
Free riders
individuals who enjoy collective goods + benefit from the actions of an interest good without joining
Selective benefits
benefit available only to those who join the group
Economic interest groups
a group advocating on behalf of the financial interests of members
Public interest groups
group that acts on behalf of the collective interests of broad group of individuals.
Lobbying
interacting with the government officials in order to advance a groups policy agenda
single issues groups
association focusing on one specfic area of public policy, often a moral issues about which they are unwilling to compromise
Government interest groups
organization acting on behalf of local, state, or foreign government
Revolving door
the movement of individuals between governance and lobbying positions
Iron triangle
coordinated + mutally beneficial activities of the bureaucracy, congress and interest groups to achieve shared policy goals
Amicus curiae brief
a brief filed by someone who is not a party to a case in an attempt to persuade the court to agree with the arguments set fourth in the brief
Issue network
webs of influence between interest groups, policy makers, and policy advocates
Grassroots lobbylist
lobbying directly to and with the people
Lobbyist
A person attempting to influence policy on behalf of a lobby
Electioneering
to take part in actinides of Ana election campaign important to interest groups to get their issues across
Protest
a public demonstration to call attention to the need for change
Civil deobedience
the interracial refusal to obey a law to call attention to it’s injustice
Social movement
large groups of citizens organizing for political change
