Marbury v. Madison
Establishes principle of judicial review in the Supreme Court (implied power of SC)
McCulluch v. Maryland
Court establishes that a national bank is “necessary and proper” and upholds the fact that Federal government is superior to state governments
Gibbons v. Ogden
Upholds the commerce clause, only national government can regulate commerce (issue of control over waterway between NY and NJ)
Heart of Atlanta Motel v. US
Court upholds the Civil Rights act using the commerce clause. The hotel must serve black customers because it is a chain, often near highways
Baker v. Carr
The court ruled that apportionment was a justiceable issue.
Wesberry v. Sanders
the court extended the decision of Baker v. Carr, and proclaimed that legislative district had to have equal porportions - “one man one vote”
Roe v. Wade
The case that legalized abortion in all states
Planned Parenthood v. Casey
Court ruled that states have some authority over restrictions on abortionment
US v. Lopez
This was the first case since the New Deal for the SC to limit the power of the government and the scope of the Commerce Clause
Printz v. US
Court ruled that the Brady law (gun control law) was unconstitutional, a matter for the states to decide not Federal government
District of Columbia v. Heller
Protected the second amendment, right to arms. Struck down a clause that guns had to be disassembled when in storage.
Shaw v. Reno
No racial based gerrymandering
