A brief definition of the USAF definition of situational awareness
The accurate perception of the elements in the environment within a volume of time and space, the comprehension of their meaning and the projection of their status in the near future. (Perception, Comprehension, Prediction)
SA Components
Geographical, System, Tactical, Environmental, and Spatial/Temporal
Geographical SA
Knowledge of location of your aircraft, other aircraft, terrain features, airports, cities, waypoints, etc
System SA
Knowledge of system status, functioning and settings, impact of malfunctions and system degradation, fuel, etc
Tactical SA
Knowledge and identification of tactical status, type, capabilities, targeting, threat prioritization, etc
Environmental SA
Knowledge of weather formations, temps, icing, clouds, fog, etc
Spatial/temporal SA
Knowledge of aircrafts altitude, attitude, heading, velocity, G-loading, flight path, etc
Levels of awareness
Level 1: Perception
Level 2: Comprehension
Level 3: Prediction
