What is Rubato?
Slowing/ speeding up in a piece (romantic) to highlight a particular note/phrase.
What is a “turn”
A turn that begins on A for example goes
ABAGA. It turns back on itself.
What does a perfect cadence sound like?
Sounds “final”, like an end to the piece. Uses chords V–> I (5 to 1)
What does a plagal cadence sound like?
A plagal cadence also sounds final however it is usually softer, and would be found at the end of hymns.

What does an imperfect cadence sound like?
Sounds incomplete- not found at the end of a piece (often found at the end of a phrase)
Ends on chord V, either ii–>V or I—>V or vi–>V
What does an interrupted cadence sound like?
Ends rather unexpectedly on a MINOR chord. Sounds like a surprise.

Imitation
when a musical idea is copied in another part.
Sequence
a repetition of a motif but at a different pitch.

A musical pattern repeated many times (riff in modern music)
Syncopation
“off beat” (accented notes on weak beats)
Drone
repeated note held throughout a piece of music
Pedal
repeated note against which changing harmonies are heard
disjunct
melody leaps from one note to another
conjunct
when the melody moves up mainly 1 pitch (step) at a time.
broken chord/arpeggio
chord played as separate notes
motif
a short melodic/ rhythmic idea that has a distinctive character.
