Plucking the strings

Making the notes ‘wobble’ up and down for expression

What is a motif?
A short musical idea (melodic or rhythmic)
What is a leitmotif?
A recurring musical idea related to a specific character/object
What is underscoring?
Music playing underneath the dialogue
What’s the definition of scalic?
Melody follows the notes of a scale
What’s the definition of triadic?
Melody uses the notes of a triad
What’s a fanfare?
A short tune often played by brass instruments to announce the arrival of something/someone important; based on the pitches of a chord
What is a pedal note?
A long, sustained note, usually in the bass/lower notes
What is an ostinato/riff?
A short repeated pattern
What is the definition of conjunct?
Melody moves by step
What is the definition of disjunct?
Melody moves with leaps/intervals
What is consonant harmony?
Sounds ‘good’ together
What is dissonant harmony?
Sounds ‘clashy’ together
What is Chromatic harmony?
Uses lots of semitones/accidentals that’s not in the home key
