What is a Concerto Grosso?
A piece for many soloists and an orchestra.
What is a Gigue?
A lively Baroque dance, usually in compound time.
Which instruments play in the Concertino?
Flute, violin and harpsichord.
Which instruments play in the Ripieno?
String orchestra – violin, viola, cello, bass.
Which instruments play the Basso Continuo?
Harpsichord, Bass, cello.
How can we define the structure?
Ternary, ABA.
Which keys are used within the piece and how are they closely related?
D major (tonic), B minor (relative minor), and A major (dominant).
The piece is diatonic, what does this mean?
Uses chords you’d expect within the key.
How can we describe the harmony of Baroque pieces?
Functional Harmony.
Where do we see distinctive perfect cadences?
At the end of sections.
Much of the melody moves in steps, what is this called?
Conjunct movement.
How do we describe the same short phrase being repeated, but on each repeat, it moves up a note?
Ascending, or rising sequence.
The piece is mainly contrapuntal, what does this mean?
More than one independent melodic strands playing together.
The piece isn’t a Fuge but has fugal characteristics in the opening what are these characteristics?
The use of imitation.
What is the main rhythmic movement?
Triplets, dotted rhythms, semi quaver runs.
