AO3 of drug therapies Flashcards
strength
evidence for effectiveness
-researcher conducted trials which showed chlorpromazine was associated with better functioning and reduced symptoms, research into clozapine found there was a 30-50% effectiveness in treatment, real life applications however only effective to an extent so combine with family therapy
limitation
doesn’t offer long term cure for SZ
-can only treat symptoms, doesn’t treat underlying causes leading to revolving door phenomenon (patients re admitted as they stop taking meds when they feel better only to get ill again and sent to hospital), not effective and can have impact on economy as people aren’t attending work and drains hospital system
strength 2
cost effective
-effective in treating positive symptoms and is cheap, strength bc easy to administer and people can live normal lives as it is estimated less than 3% of people with SZ live permanently in hospital, good on economy
