Q

strength of interactionist

A

research support, use children adopted from finnish parents with schizophrenia and parents assessed for their parenting style, compare to control group without genetic link, parenting style characterised by high levels of criticism and EE implicated development of schizophrenia but only with children with high genetic risk, strength because it gives direct support and shows there must be a genetic vulnerability and environmental trigger

Q

 limitation of diathesis

A

Oversimplistic, though schizogene and schizophrenic parenting style are the major source of stress, there are a range of genes that can cause a vulnerability, stress can be result of any trauma as well as genetic, limitation as diathesis stress model is reduction is in explaining what can cause schizophrenia which can cause doctors to mistreat patients and therefore labelling patients into them fulfilling a self-fulfilling prophecy

Q

strength of treatment

A

research support, researcher randomly allocated patients to drugs and CBT had lower symptoms when compared to those only took medication, strength because it shows it effective but only for short term, this is because there are no differences in rate of hospital admission therefore suggesting is not effective in the long-term, overcoming this we would need to incorporate family therapy

Q

older version of diathesis stress model ao1

A

MEEHL
- Believe diagnosis was entirely genetic and was the result of a single schizo gene, led to development of biologically schizotypic personality, One characteristic is sensitivity to stress so chronic stress can trigger genetic vulnerability

Q

modern version of diathesis stress model ao1

A

READ ET AL

  • no single schizogene and there are a range of factors beyond genetics including childhood trauma as the brain because more susceptible to stress
  • hypothalamic pituitary adrenal system (HPA), becomes overactive and the person becomes more vulnerable to later stress

Q

modern understanding of stress

A

anything that risks triggering SZ especially parenting
- cannabis becomes a stressor and childhood trauma becomes diathesis which increases the risk of SZ by seven times as it interferes with the dopamine system
