German Purity law
Gebot ordered that ingredients of beer be limited to water, barley and hops, yeast were added after Louis Pasteur discovery in 1857

Ceral Malt Beverage
Under Kansas Law “cereal malt beverage means any fermented or undistilled liquor brewed or made from malt or from a mixture of malt or malt substitute or any flavored malt beverage but does not included any such liquor which is more than 3.2% alcohol by weight
Beer means a beverage contains more than 3.2% alcohol by weight, obtained by alcoholic fermentation of an infusion or concoction of barley, or other grain, malt, and hops in water and includes beer, ale, stout, lager, porter, and similar beverages having such alcoholic content. For purposes of this Notice, “beer” cannot contain more than 6% alcohol by volume.
Salting out
Different salt concentrations found in samples
Salting out effect eliminated by
Saturating all sampled and controls with salt
Diluting samples from 5:1 to 10:1 with a dilute internal standard solution
MAjor distinction between drugs and slcohol
Strong analgesic effects of narcotics vs weak pain killing action of alcohol
Generally weaker potency of alcohol; 10g vs a few mg for efficacy
Esophageal varices;
Are dilated blood vessels w/in walls of esophagus
Patients w/ cirrhosis develop Portal Hypertension
Blood flow through liver is diminished-flow increases through the microscopic blood vessels within the esophageal wall
As blood flow increases, vessel begin to dilate
Dilation can be profound
Original diameter of vessels measured in millimeters final, fully established, esophageal varix may be 0.5 to 1.0 cm or larger in diameter
Blood vessels continue to dilate until they become rupture
Esophageal varices rupture, pts become acutely ill
50% Esophageal varices will eventually bleed
Mortality rate for esophageal variceal bleeding in the first event is between 40-70%
Mortality is due to multiple factors: liver failure, sepsis, exsanguination, cerebral edema, complications associated with anemia
Effects on liver
Alcohol-induced liver disease common condition
Unlikely w/ consumption of less than 80 g/day
Increased dramatically w/ consumption exceeding 160g/day either regular or binge-10-15 year period
Fatty infiltration
Overloading of liver’s metabolic functions by alcohol
Accumulation un-metabolized fatty acids
Not directly related to cirrhosis and reversible
Chronic ingestion of ETOH most common cause of cirrhosis
Diffuse damage to hepatic cells; nodular regeneration, fibrosis and failure of function
8-20% chronic alcoholics irresistible cirrhosis
Sufficient evidence demonstrating BACS of 0.05g% and above produce impairment of the major components of driver performance to include
reaction time, tracking, divided attention performance, information processing, oculomotor functions, perception
