What is anxiety?
It is a sympathetic reponse to fear, stress, or danger that results in sweaty palms, increased heart rate, dry mouth, etc. It can sometimes affect quality of life, and normal everyday situations - this is when an anxiety disorder is diagnosed.
Examples of anxiety disorders.
GAD, SAD, OCD, PTSD, phobias, panic disorder
Plus insomnia (trasient, intermediate and chronic)
What neurotransmitters are involved in anxiety?
GABA, 5-HT, NA [Glu]
What is the role of GABA in treatment of anxiety?
GABA is an inhibitory transmitter. It is the site of action of barbiturates and BDZs. Increased GABA-ergic transmission causes a decrease in anxiety.
What is the role of 5-HT in treatment of anxiety?
Increased 5-HT reduces anxiety.
5-HT(1a) agonists are anxiolytic.
