What is a phobia
Persistent fear of a particular object or situation that provokes an immediate response
Even though the individual knows it is a irrational fear they cannot control the immense terror
To be diagnosed the phobia must disrupt individuals life
Physical symptoms of phobia
Shortness of breath
Palpitations
Feeling of losing control
Intense Terror
DSM-IV Classification for specific phobia
Exposure to stimulus provokes immediate anxiety response
Recognises fear is excessive
Lasted more than six months in people under 18
ICD-10 classification for a specific phobia
Anxiety restricted to presence of that particular object or situation
Phobic situation avoided wherever possible
Symptoms due to build up of anxiety and not secondary to other symptoms such as delusion
What is anxiety ?
Anxiety disorders give a continuous feeling of fear which is disabling and can impose on daily functioning
Can be triggered by something that seems trivial to others
