Types of depression
Major depression- episode of depression that occurs sudden
May be reactive (external factors) or endogenous (internal factors)
Manic depression (bipolar) - alteration between two extreme moods
Mood changes occur in a regular cycle
Mania (Extreme happiness, over activity etc)
Followed by depression
3 types of responses
Emotional-sadness irritability
Physiological- agitation Fatigue
Cognitive- Poor concentration, worthlessness and hopelessness
DSM-IV classification of single episode depression
5 of list
E.g. Insomnia, fidgety, worthlessness and guilt, less ability to concentrate, recurrent thoughts of death
The symptoms not caused by medication or situations and hinder person from important day-to-day functioning
ICD-10 classification of depression
Loss of interest and enjoyment
Reduced energy
Depressed mood
Other common symptoms : reduced concentration and self-esteem
Guilt and worthlessness
What are affective disorders
Disabling moods preventing a person leading a normal life, at work, socially or within their family
Depression is the most common affective disorder
