disorder: chronic anxiety over a long period
generalized anxiety disorder
disorder; consists of recurrent sudden anxiety attacks, the person experiences intense terror or dread

panic disorder
abrupt surge of intense anxiety rising to its peak
panic attack
the person suffering knows exactly what they are afraid of
phobic disorders

fear of strangers
xenophobia
fear of open places and unfamiliar setting
agoraphobia
miscellaneous category of marked persistent irrational fears, most common
specific phobias
fear and embarrassment in dealings w/ others

ex: saying i take that back after a compulsive thought

ex; woman checks on kids alot bc she resents them
reaction formation
exposing the client to stimuli that evokes discomfort until they are used to it
exposure therapies
a series of fear arousing stimuli carefully graded from mild to strongly fearful are used.
systematic desensitization
therapist controlled exposure to the imagined re creation to a fear arousing situation
implosive therapy
the individual experiences the actual feared situation rather than imagining it under the therapists direction
In vivo exposure
exposing the client immediately to high intensity and prolonged stimulation
flooding
calls clients attention to the unrealistic thoughts that serve as cues for their maladaptive behavior
cognitive restructuring
a sudden distracting stimulus such as an unpleasant noise will serve to terminate obsessional thoughts.
