Definition of obsession.
Intrusive, recurrent, persistent, unwanted thoughts, impulses, and images that cause distress.
Definition of compulsion.
Repetitive behaviors or mental acts that an individual feels driven to perform in response to obsession or rigid rules.
Expected Anxiety vs. Anxiety Disorders
- Intensity or degree of distress
- Level of impairment
- Ability to recover
Theories of how anxiety develops
1) Psychoanalytic - fears may develop when trying to suppress an impulse
2) Attachment - insecure attachment to caregiver causing inability to adapt
3) Learned - mispaired or paired internalization of anxiety cue to external experiences (learned from a personal experience)
4) Genetic - familial trends
How does behavioral inhibition correlate to anxiety?
Children who are unusually timid or withdrawn in unfamiliar or novel situations are at risk for acquiring anxiety. Lab-based construct of a “timid, shy, or inhibited” child.
What is the difference between DSM-IV and DSM-V Criteria for Anxiety Disorders?
DSM-IV clumped Anxiety into one description whereas the DSM-V breaks it down into OCD, PTSD, and Anxiety Disorders
Risk Factors of Anxiety Disorders
1) Behaviorally inhibited
2) Offspring of parents with Anxiety Disorders
3) Insecure attachments
Definition of a Panic Attack.
A discrete period of intense fear/discomfort where 4 of the following symptoms occur abruptly and peak within 10 minutes:
- palpitations
- sweating
- trembling
- shortness of breath
- nausea
- fear of losing control
- fear of death
- dizy
- chest pain and choking
What are the 3 types of panic?
1) Unexpected/Uncued
2) Situation-bound/Cued
3) Predisposed
*Over time, unexpected panic attacks become situationally bound
Definition of Panic Disorder.
“Fear of fear itself.” Characterized by persistent concern, fear, or worry of additional panic attacks.
Separation Anxiety
Anxiety concerning separation from home or attachments.
Social Anxiety
Anxiety in social situations due to fear of rejection or embarrassment.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Anxiety or worry occurring more days than not about a variety of things.
Selective Mutism
Consistent failure to speak in specific social situations despite speaking at other times.
