What is anxiety disorder
anxiety = a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, that can be mild or severe
- anxiety disorders people find it hard to control their worries, have more constant feeling of anxiety and it can affect their daily life
Sx of anxiety
Restlessness
Fidgeting
Tension headaches
Trembling
Inability to relax
Worries about future/misfortuna
Feeling on edge
Difficulty concentrating
Light headed / dizziness
Sweating
Tachycardic
Epigastric discomfort
Dry mouth
What is a panic attack
Sudden onset of extreme anxiety
What is generalised anxiety disorder
- Anxiety which is generalized and persistent
- Often described as ‘free floating’ (no particular environmental
circumstance)

GAD 7 - scoring scale
GAD treatment
CBT
SSRIs - half dose of depression - sertraline 1st line, venlafaxine 2nd line
Benzodiazepines - short term
What is panic disorder
- Recurring panic attacks – sudden onset of physical and
cognitive symptoms - Persistent worry about having another
- May avoid situations that trigger attack
What is agoraphobia
- Anxiety and panic symptoms associated with places or
situations where escape may be difficult or embarrassing
What is social phobia
Overwhelming anxiety in everyday social situations
What is simple/specific phobia
Recurring excessive and unreasonable symptoms of anxiety in presence of specific feared object or situation
Panic disorder treatment
CBT
SSRI
Consider clomipramine or imipramine if no improvement
Benzodiazepines in emergency
Exercise
Support groups

What is OCD
recurrent obsessional thoughts and/or usually related compulsive acts
obsessive thoughts and compulsions can cause distress and also functional impairment to the sufferer
OCD management

SSRIs - usually high dose - escitalopram, fluoxetine
Clomipramine if SSRI fails
