What are the defining features of generalised anxiety disorder?
Pervasive symptoms of worry and anxiety which are disproportionate, and cause impairment in functioning;
Not caused by another mental disorder, physical health problem or drug/alcohol abuse
Medications which can cause anxiety?
SSRIs
Salbutamol
Steroids
Controllable anxiety which is related to a particular life event
Situational anxiety
Temporary anxiety occuring in response to a life stressor which persists no longer than 6 months after the stressor ends
Adjustment disorder
Recurrent episodes of acute anxiety with physical symptoms e.g. SOB, palpitations, nausea, fear of dying
Panic disorder
Anxiety or persistent fear which is limited to social situations and fear of scrutiny/embarrassment
Social phobia
Anxiety due to intrusive thoughts or unwanted behaviours
Obsessive compulsive disorder
Anxiety provoked by exposure to reminders of past trauma
Post-traumatic stress disorder
Anxiety related to specific physical health complaints which have no medical basis
Somatoform disorders
Anxiety related to fear of gaining weight
Anorexia nervosa
Suggested by weight loss, heat intolerance, opthalmopathy, tremor
Hyperthyroidism
Paroxysmal episodes of anxiety co-existing with hypertension and/or tachycardia

Optimal management of other co-morbid physical/mental health problems, substance misuse
Practical solutions to other stressors e.g. work, personal life
Provide written material about GAD and treatment options
Step 2 interventions for anxiety?
Low-intensity psychological interventions e.g. individual self-help, psychoeducational groups
