Anxiety Affecting EWT Flashcards
Who found that anxiety has a negative effect on EWT?
Johnson and Scott in 1976
Aim of the Johnson and Scott study?
To find out whether anxiety has an effect on EWT
Procedure of Johnson and Scott study?
Low anxiety: participants hear an argument going on in another room then a man walks out carrying a pen with pen grease on his hands
High anxiety: participants hear the same argument but also hear glass smashing then a man walks out of the room carrying a knife that was covered in blood.
Participants were later then asked to identify the man from a set of 50 men
Results of the Johnson and Scott study?
% of correct recall for low anxiety was 49% whilst % of correct recall for high anxiety was 33%
Tunnel Theory
A witnesses attention narrows to focus on the weapon because it’s a source of anxiety
Who else researched anxiety on EWT
Yuille and Cutshall 1986
Procedure of Yuille and Cutshalls study?
A real life shooting happened. 13/21 witnesses agreed to participate
Participants were interviewed 4-5 months after the shooting and this was compared with the original interviews
Results of Yuille and Cutshall Study?
Participants who had higher stress recalled 88% accurately
Whilst participants who had lower stress only recalled 75% accurately
Very accurately only minor changes
