Individuals reaction to stress will depend upon a balance between cognitive processing and their ability to cope
How can you cope with stress?
Problem focus = efforts directed to modifying stressor
Emotional focus = modifying emotional reaction
What is general anxiety disorder and phobias?
- Several months of symptoms
- All the symptoms of anxiety can occur (psychological arousal, autonomic arousal, muscle tension, hyperventilation and sleep disturbance)
What is the DD for anxiety disorders?
Depression, schizophrenia, dementia, substance misuse
Thyrotoxicosis, phaeochromocytoma, hypoglycaemia, asthma and arrhythmia’s
What is the management of generalised anxiety disorders?
Counselling
Relaxation training
Medication (SSRI’s + TCA)
CBT
What is OCD?
Recurrent obsessional thoughts or act
Ideas, images or impulses
Unplesant and distressing
Usual key anxiety symptoms arise because of distress or attempts to resist
What is OCD management?
Education and explanation
Medication = SSRI and clomipramine

Delayed and or protected reaction to a stressor of exceptional severity
What are the 3 key elements to PTSD?
Hyperarousal (anxiety, irritability, insomnia)
Re-experiencing phenomena (flashbacks and nightmares)
Avoidance of reminders (emotional numbness)
What is the management of PTSD?
NICE Mild = watchful waiting Trauma-focused CBT Eye movement desensitisation SSRI's or TCA's
