SSRI and SNRI- for chronic anxiety
Like Paxil
Benzodiazepines
for short term use only and in acute situations
Zanax and Ativan
Beta Blockers-Propranolol or atenolol
can be used for performance anxiety. Keep heart rate low and decrease anxiety
Cannot use Benzodiazepines
With other CNS depressants. Long term use can lead to independance and is highly discouraged. If used chronically, must taper
Benzo’s metabilized in liver
rapid onset. help with insomnia. CP450 drug interactions must be considered.
They cause: sedatin, decreased anxiety, muscle relaxation, anti-convulsant action
Valium-fairly long half-life
Good to reduce spasm and decrease seizre activity
Xanax
works quickly and has moderate half-life. Quick onset. The most addictive are due to rapid onset of action.
Ativan
is commonly used for anxiety-slower onset but shorter half-life
SSRI to tx anxiety
Paxal for social anxiety
If someone has severe anxiety
Treat with SSRI or SNRI. They can have a 2 week course of intermediate acting benzos to provide relief until the SSRI/SNRI takes effect.
Buspirone (buspar)
long term treatment of panic attacks, not habit-forming, is not a CNS drug. It has a high affinity for serotonin receptors and less affinity for Dopamine receptors. SSRI that are indicated for anxiety offer better coverage for GAD
Atarax AND Visteral
USED FOR mild anxiety. It is a strong antihistamine
Benzodiazepines and pregnancy
Category D-
May cause cleft problems, preterm labor, “floppy baby”
Pregnancy-if Benzo is a must
Clonazepam (Klonopin) may be the best choice. Please refer this person
non-benzos and pregnancy
Buspirone (BuSpar) used as an anxioloytic. Category B. Try to avoid. Limited data.
Visteril-category C short term use
Ambien-Categgory C use as a last resort for short term
