- not controllable
- causing significant distress and impairment in function
onset 20-40
more in females

- benzodiazepines (short term only)

A
- recurrent, panic, unpredictable
- secondary fear of dying, losing control or going mad
- can be associated with agoraphobia
onset mid 30s

what causes panic attacks?
A
- lactate
- increased CO2
- increased metabolism in anterior pole of temporal lobe- parahippocampal gyrus

-CBT
-SSRIs/SNRIs/TCAs
- benzodiazepines (short term)

-present for at least 2 weeks
-resistance should be present
- not pleasant rituals
- at least 1 major depressive episode
