antiseizure Flashcards
what is a seizure
a seizure disorder that results from abnormal electric discharges from the cerebral neurons characterized by a loss or disturbance of consciousness and usually involuntary, uncontrolled movements.
what the differenace between seizure and epilepsy?
epilepsy is unknowed reason (multiple provoked chronic seizure )
and seizure is can predetermined reason
seizure is broken down into what
partial (part of the brain) and complex ( more of the brain)
what is partial broken down into
simple ( muscle twitching w/ same consciousness)
complex ( muscle twitching w/out consciousness)
What is general is broken into?
1) absence petit mal *usually occur in children
2) tonic- clonic [grand mal] (tonic: muscle is tense and clonic: rapid convulsions (twitching)) tonic clonic is both
3) status epilepticus ( seizure happening for a long time 5 mins or more pt runs out of O2/ glucose and leads to brain dead)
* * we give pt a depressant
Epilepsy
Patho
Character
Causes
Abnormal electric discharges from cerebral neurons
Characteristics
Loss of consciousness
Convulsive movements
Causes
Unknown
Secondary to trauma, anoxia, infection, stroke
Isolated seizures due to fever, electrolyte, or acid base imbalance
What causes action potential Resting value Threshold value Depolarization value and what comes in? What come out when it reach its peak ?
The neurotransmitter are attached to dendrites
Resting -70
Threshold -55
Depolarization +30 to +40 sodium comes in
Potassium
Phenytoin
Action: suppress sodium influx
Use:
Therapeutic level: 10 to 30 mcg/ml
Contraindications- pregnancy (teratogenic)
S/E: Gingival hyperplasia, purple glove syndrome
