Q
Antipsychotics/Neuroleptics/Antischizophrenic
ATYPICAL/2ND GEN
A
Atypical/2nd gneration (Less extrapyramidal side effects; efficacy in treatment resistant psychotic disorder; improves -ve symptoms as well)
- Benzamide:
- Amisulpride-selective D2 antagonist
- Dibenzodiazepines:
- Clozepine (highly unselective, last line of treatment, side effects include leucopoenia and agranulocytosis);
- Olanzepine (Huntington’s)
- Risperidone (Huntington’s)
- Quetiapine (Huntington’s)

Q
Side effects of Antipsychotics
A
Side Effects:
- disruption of D2 receptors in pituitary gand - increased prolactin production - breast tissue developement and pain
- Weight gain-predisposing factor for diabetes
- Neuroleptic Malignant syndrome - Malignant hyperthermia - confusion kidney failure
- Antagonist of alpha1 adrenergic receptor - vasodialtion - postural hypotention
- Antagonist of H1 in CNS - sedation; anti-emetic action
- Antagonist of mACH receptor - dry mouth and eyes, GI motility/constipation
- Extrapyramidal motor disturbances:
- acute Parkinsonism due to blockage of nigrostriatal dopamine pathway - easily reversed by stopping treatment
- chronic Tarditive dyskinesia (involuntary movement face and limbs) - proliferation of dopamine receptors in striatum - worsened by stopping medication, no effective treatment
