antipsychotic depot injections Flashcards
Long-acting depot injections can be considered for patients with psychosis or schizophrenia who
prefer such treatment after an acute episode or where avoiding non-adherence to antipsychotic medication is a clinical priority.
First-generation antipsychotic depot injections may give rise to a higher incidence of
of adverse-effects such as extrapyramidal reactions.
Extrapyramidal reactions occur less frequently with second-generation antipsychotic depot preparations, such as
aripiprazole, paliperidone, risperidone and olanzapine embonate.
There are very few differences in efficacy between individual first-generation antipsychotic depot injections; but this drug may be more effective in preventing relapses than other first-generation antipsychotic depot preparations.
