Antiprotozoals Flashcards
Chloroquine
Anti malarial 4-aminoquinolone drug
Accumulates in food vacuoles where haemoglobin is used as a source of protein
Haem biproduct may form ROS so is dimerised to hemozin
Chloroquine inhibits this
Sulfadoxine
Anti malarial Sulfa drug- sulfaoxazole equivalent
P-aminobenzoate analogue - inhibits DHPS in folic acid pathway
Pyrimethamine
Antimalarial trimethoprim equivalent
Inhibits DHFR
Fansidar
Antimalarial co-trimoxazole equivalent
Combination of Sulfadoxine and pyrimethamine
Used to treat p. Falciparum
Arteminsin
Anti malarial prodrug of dihydroarteminsin
Acts on Protozoa in erthyrocytes, producing ROS by unknown mechanisms
Also prevent oocyst formation in mosquitos
Suramin
Choice anti-trypanosome drug (lower therapeutic index than melarsen)
Inhibits glycolytic enzymes
Glycerol 3P oxidase and NAD+ dependent glycerol 3P dehydrogenase
This prevents ATP synthesis
