Antiparkinsons Flashcards
Rasagiline (Azilect)
A Selective MAO-B Inhibitor
Breaks down Catecholamines
Increases dopaminergic stimulation in CNS
Loses Selectivity at higher doses
Monotherapy or in conjunction with Levodopa therapy
Selegiline (Eldepryl)
SAME AS Rasagiline
“A Selective MAO-B Inhibitor
Breaks down Catecholamines

Loses Selectivity at higher doses
Monotherapy or in conjunction with Levodopa therapy”
Bromocriptine
Stimulates D2 receptors and Antagonizes D1 receptors
Delays need for Levodopa
May be given with Carbidopa-Levodopa
Can worsen Vascular Disease
Dyskinesias
Pramipexole (Mirapex)
Non-ergot NDDRA (non dopamine dopamine receptor agonist)
Used to treat: Early and late stage Parkinson’s
Delays need for Levodopa
Fewer Dyskinesias than Bromocriptine
Entacapone (Comtan)
COMT Inhibitor Catechol-O-methyltransferase inhibitors)
Adjunctive therapy with Levodopa
Reduces on-off effects
Caution in pre-existing liver disease
Amantadine
Antiviral Drug
Used to treat: Mild to Moderate Parkinson’s
Dopaminergic and Anticholinergic Effects
Carbidopa-Levodopa (Sinemet)
Dopamine Agonist
Directly Replaces Dopamine
Carbidopa decreases the Adverse Effects of Levodopa
GI Side Effects
Take on an empty stomach*
Benztropine Mesylate (Cogentin)
Used to treat: Parkinsons and Extrapyramidal symptoms from antipsychotics
May cause HYPERTHERMIA
Anticholinergic symptoms
Anticholinergic Syndrome
