Antimicrobials: Monobactams Flashcards
monobactam category drug
aztreonam
monobactams are only used for
gram negative species
monobactam activity
moderate to excellent against gram neg aerobes including pseudomonas
the monobactam, Aztreonam, is a good substitute for
the ahminoglycosides in patients at risk for toxicity
cross allergy with PCNs/cephs and monobactams (aztreonam)
unlikely, except if the allergy is to ceftazidime.
why is ceftazidime allergy dangerous in aztreonam use?
because the side chains are the same
Aside from a substitute for aminoglycosides, what is another circumstance where monobactams like aztreonam are useful?
if you are using many other drugs.
because this drug has a narrow activity, it is not often used on its own but it is used in combo with other abx.
aztreonam will be used on its own in what disease state?
CF for pseudomonas or exacerbation (inhaled)
aztreonam is often used with what other drugs?
clindamycin
macrolides
