Antimicrobials Flashcards
What are the 7 main categories of Antimicrobials and their respective MOA?
1) Sulfonamides - Inhibitors of metabolism
2) Penicillins -Inhibitors of cell wall synthesis
3) Cephalosporins -Inhibitors of cell wall synthesis
4) Flouroquinolones- Inhibitors of nucleic acid function
5, 6, 7) Tetracyclines, Aminoglycosides, Macrolides. Inhibitors of protein synthesis
What type of bacteria does Penicillin work best for?
Gram +
Name the 5 Penicillin drugs
1) Penicillin G
2) Ampicillin
3) Amoxicillin
4) Augmentin
5) Carbenicillin
What is the Penicillin MOA?
Inhibits cell wall synthesis (via transpeptidase) against Gram + (Staph, Strep)
Name the 3 Cephalosporin drugs
1) Cerphalexin
2) Cefaclor
3) Cefoperazone
What is Vancomycin?
A drug that attacks the cell wall, is not a Beta Lactam and is heavy duty reserved for bad infections
