Q

How do Positron emission topography scanners work?

A

Positron emitting isotope is administered to the body, and some reaches the brain via the blood system. The positron meets an electron shortly after being emitted and they annihilate causing two gamma photons to be released. An image is built up of where the isotope is in the brain

Q

How are positron emitting diodes made

A

They are manufactured by placing a stable isotope in the path of a proton beam. Some nuclei absorb some protons and become unstable positron emitters
