What are the two adverse effects of the Statins & what should we assess for?
Hepatotoxic
- check LFT: Alt(8-20/3-35) & Ast( 5-40)
- nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain, jaundice.
- Alcohol use
Myopathy— rhabdomyolysis
- check CK levels
- muscle pain and tenderness.
What is the best time to take statins ?
Statins should be taken at evening time.
What is the prototype drug for cholesterol absorption inhibitor?
Ezetimibe ( Zetia)
What are two adverse effects of ezetimibe( Zetia)?
Hepatitis
Myopathy
What are two drugs of bile acid sequestrants?
Colesevelam( wechol)
Colestipol( Cholestid)
What is the 1 adverse effect of bile acid sequestrants such as colesevelam and how to manage it?
Constipation: give fiber and fluid
How should colesevelam be administered?
Po tablet with 80z of water and food. But not with other medications
What is the adverse effects of Niacin( vitamin B3) which is prescribed for high cholesterol? What are the intervention?
- hepatotoxic
- facial flushing, tingling in extremities
: give aspirin 30 min before taking

- to lower LDL and raise HDL.
- prevent coronary artery disease, heart attack, and stroke
